There are two common types of bats that tend to get into homes and become a nuisance in New Jersey: the Big Brown bat and the Little Brown bat.


Biologists will tell you that you can tell the difference between these two types of bats by counting the occipital rings in their ears (the Big Brown Bat has more rings than the Little Brown Bat). But at All Wildlife Removal Service, we'll tell you that we can tell the difference because Big Brown bat poop is bigger then Little Brown bat poop!






Both of these kinds of bats live in colonies. The location of their roost is dependent on weather, environment and biologic conditions.


We can also further separate colonies into matriarchal colonies (female bats) or bachelor colonies (male bats). In autumn, the female bats and male bats get together, hanging out in one large colony to mate. When the mating season is complete the large colonies will break up and the bats tend to head to wherever they are going to roost for the winter.


In decades past, they would fly south to the Carolinas or Virginia and winter over in caves. (Bats look for a constant temperature of approximately 55 degrees Fahrenheit for winter hibernation.) But back in the 1980s, when many rivers were damned to provide hydroelectric power, many bats were killed and the general population dipped. These days we're seeing an upswing of bats wintering over in the northeast, instead of migrating. This is similar to how, many years ago, we never saw Canadian geese in New Jersey during the summer months. Now we have resident geese year-round. We can’t necessarily substantiate it, but in the pest control industry, we see more bats in people’s homes in the winter these days then there were 15 years ago.


When the cold months come, bats will hibernate in attics that are warm enough. It’s not uncommon for someone to call us at All Wildlife Removal Service and tell us they were getting luggage out of the attic for a winter vacation... only to discover a bat in their house that very night. Or a family whose home is under construction may find them in the wall. This is most common in the plumbing wall which is wider than other walls throughout the house and therefore the first choice for bats to take up residence.




Matriarchal Bats





The Story of Matriarchal Bat Colonies


Bats in attics are most common in summertime, starting in April. These are most often matriarchal colonies - often an extended family of sisters, aunts, grandmothers, daughters, and nieces.


One thing about bats, as far as they’re concerned: The more, the merrier!



A common scenario goes like this... It's a lovely summer evening. The sun is beginning to set. The mosquitos are coming out. The homeowners are relaxing in the back yard. And suddenly, they spot black figures or shadows like small, quick skydivers leaving their house and then returning to it.
These are no ordinary skydivers, though. These are matriarchal bats coming out of their happy attic roost to do their part in controlling the mosquito population of New Jersey.

Mommas will use an attic as a nursery because when pups are born their hair is very thin. A warm attic will act as an incubator. When mom goes out to get food in the evening and has to leave her babies, the pups (as bat babies are called) are kept warm by the heat in the attic. (If you have found a bat in the living quarters - separate from the attic - or basement of your home, it is likely you have a bachelor bat.)

There are some "positives" associated with a matriarchal colony. For one thing, they tend to be very punctual in regards to when they come in or go out, because their body's are getting ready to take care of pups and instinct takes over. This is a "pro" because it makes it much easier to plan your home's bat abatement job.

But there are also some negatives associated with the matriarchal colony. There is a period every summer when you can’t do any kind of bat abatement on a house due to the new pups, who cannot yet fly. If you have flightless bats in the house and then separate their mothers from them with a bat exclusion, there are several possible scenarios... none of them pleasant.

A) The babies will die - and if there are enough of them you will have an odor. Since bats tend to congregate in tight spots, you could spend just as much money cutting open your walls to remove the babies as you have paid for the bat abatement

B) Some momma bats don’t take this separation lying down and will go to great extremes to get back in the house (i.e. your front door)

Or C) You could wake up in the middle of the night to see a couple of baby bats crawling across your floor looking for momma (or worse, step on them in the dark)!

During this nursing time, all bat abatement programs have to be put on hold. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t prep work to be done on your house so that when the babies take flight, the abatement can be completed in a timely fashion.

Abatements are safe in New Jersey up until the first week of June and then again after August 1st once the babies are flying . In general, All Wildlife Removal Service has a policy of performing no bat valve jobs during the last two weeks of June and throughout all of July.



Bachelor Bats





The story of Bachelor Bat Colonies...


The male bats take no responsibility in raising their babies (called pups).


A colony of male bats is called a bachelor colony.



When All Wildlife Removal Service catches a bat in a house we always take the time to determine the bat's gender. Most often during the summer months, bats that are found inside the living quarters of your house (separate from the attic) are male. These are also the bats that end up in your basement.


The male bat has the option of roosting during the day in weather conditions that are more comfortable than the female bat, who has to tend to her babies. Often if the attic is too hot, the male will go into a home's interior plumbing wall - which also provides access to the basement (where, of course, the temperature is more comfortable). This is the same wall that holds the chase-pipe, which runs out the top of a home's roof all the way to the basement and equalizes the plumbing pressure.

The Bat Job



If you discover a bat in your home, attic, or basement you'll need to find a way to not only remove them - but much more importantly, to keep them from coming back!





After your contractor performs a thorough inspection of the structure, it is time to conduct a complete bat abatement. This is the only long-term way you can legally solve a bat problem in New Jersey.


All Wildlife Removal Service conducts our inspection by methodically going around the home or business identifying every hole the size of a nickel or larger and sealing them to prevent bats from using them to get in to the structure.


We will also establish the egress points that bats would utilize to get in and out of the building, and then install bat valves over those openings, which allow bats to leave but deny re-entry. (These valves are the same concept as check valves in plumbing.)


Because bats usually hibernate through the winter, if we are performing our bat abatement on your home or business during the winter months we will install semi-permanent valves. By the 3rd week of April all bats should be flying (unless temperature or weather dictates that we should wait longer). At that time, we pull the valves and seal those egress points.
